The Walking Dead Season 6 Part 1: A Look Back and A Look Ahead

I've been politely asked about a dozen times (you know who you are) to do a post on the latest season of AMC's The Walking Dead. I initially couldn't think of a good idea, but eventually decided to write about the first half of season 6. I've read all the comics to date (they are at issue #151), and I feel that I can apply that knowledge to what may or may not happen in the second half of season 6. Let's start with a look back at the first half:

We'll have to wait until February 9th for more 'The Walking Dead'

When it comes down to it, the only thing worse than the prospect of too many zombies is the prospect of no zombies at all. AMC revealed that The Walking Dead will have its mid-season premiere on Sunday, February 9, meaning you'll likely have to turn to your loved ones or religious belief system or other source of deep strength in order to make it through the next two months. The Walking Dead to get a spin-off?

Indeed, AMC announced today that it is in the early stages of developing a spin-off to The Walking Dead, set for 2015. Details are scarce. Here’s what AMC had to say, according to TVLine. 

“Building on the success of the most popular show on television for adults 18-49 is literally a no-brainer,” said AMC prez Charlie Collier in a statement. “We look forward to working with Robert, Gale and Dave again as we develop an entirely new story and cast of characters. It’s a big world and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse.” 

Series creator Robert Kirkman added this:

“After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe. The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.”

'Better Call Saul' moving forward

AMC and Sony Pictures Television announced today that they're moving forward with the Better Call Saul spinoff of Breaking Bad. The show is planned as a "one-hour prequel that will focus on the evolution of the popular Saul Goodman character before he ever became Walter White’s lawyer."

The series is not a totally done deal, though. Deadline reports that the series order is "pending the complication of Sony TV’s deals with Gilligan, [BB writer/producer Peter] Gould and Odenkirk," and the Sony/AMC statement does not mention any of these three men. It just touts that it has reached a "licensing agreement," and that wasn't an oversight: Sony tells Vulture that the studio has "nothing else to add right now."

The Walking Dead Season 4 Trailer

I'm so glad I got into this show, since I'm now all caught up and quite excited for the new season. Judging by this trailer, it will be a good one. The Walking Dead returns October 13th on AMC, and the only downside is that I now have to wait a few months after binge watching the first 3 seasons. I guess I can't complain too much though, since I thought season 2 was great despite most fans finding it boring. Bring on season 4, now with another cast member from The Wire.

That is all. Just very excited, as anyone who watches the show can understand. 8 episodes left! Then no more! It all starts/ends on August 11th, on AMC. Can't come soon enough.

My one gripe about 'The Walking Dead'

(Aside from the restrictions due to being on cable) my only gripe with AMC's The Walking Dead is the lack of blood splatter. You see blood, and hear it splatter, but the group's faces never get even a drop of blood splattered on them. It's ridiculous! Just one splatter is all I ask for.

Well this sucks: Breaking Bad to return August 11th

Bypassing the usual July premiere date, Breaking Bad will instead debut the final 8 episodes starting Sunday, August 11. If there's any good news, it's that AMC will air "Talking Bad" after each new episode. Regardless of the delay, I still can't wait.

'Better Call Saul' spinoff?

As AMC‘s Breaking Bad is heading into its final eight-episode run this summer, the network and series producer Sony TV are exploring keeping the franchise alive with a spinoff series centered on one of Breaking Bad‘s most recognizable supporting characters, Bob Odenkirk‘s unflappable criminal lawyer Saul Goodman. There are no deals in place yet as the project is in its nascent stages, but I hear it is being conceived by Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan and series writer-producer Peter Gould, who created the Saul character together for a Season 2 episode written by Gould. In the episode, titled “Better Call Saul“, Walt (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse (Aaron Paul) hire the flamboyant Goodman after Badger (Matt L. Jones) is caught by the DEA. Goodman, who has been a regular presence on the show since, is a sleazy but highly competent criminal lawyer with a penchant for over-the-top TV commercials in which he uses his signature tagline “Better Call Saul!” Saul has served as Breaking Bad‘s comic relief, which is not surprising given Odenkirk’s strong comedy background. As a result, I hear the potential spinoff is eyed as a comedy, which could be one-hour, but a half-hour format also is being explored.

If done right, I'd be all for this; Buzzfeed offers 6 ways that it could.

AMC back on DISH

Now I can finally stop hearing those annoying commercials telling us to call some number to complain about DISH Network dropping AMC months ago. They weren't only annoying; they were pointless. They aired the commercials on AMC, which means anyone watching them wasn't a subscriber to DISH anyway... were we supposed to put up posters and tell everyone on DISH that they should call this number to get it back? Wouldn't they already know that their cable provider had dropped AMC by the lack of AMC on their TV? I must be missing something, but I don't care anymore since I won't have to hear another one of those god damn commercials again.

Breaking Bad gets a premiere date

Season 5 of Breaking Bad, which will be broken up into two separate 8 episode runs, will premiere on July 15th at 10pm on AMC.  Unfortunately the second half of the final season won't air until summer of 2013, but there's not much anyone can do about that other than wait.
