2014 NFL Picks Week 17

And so we've reached the final week of the 2014 regular season. I ended up with an OK record for Week 16, finishing 10-6 due to a lot of non-competitive games. I would need to be perfect this week to reach my goal of 70% for the season, so I don't think that's going to happen. I did fare well for upset picks however, going 2 for 3 to bring my season total to 19 and 16. Unless I go crazy and pick 4 incorrect upsets this week, I will finish at .500 or better for the season. That's a vast improvement from last year, when I was terrible. I correctly picked Green Bay for my Pick of the Week, and improved to 14-2 for the season.

Well, there were 2 games I lost this week because I really wanted the Eagles to make the playoffs. The first was Philadelphia losing to Washington at home, which was just painful to watch. The second was picking Indianapolis (who had nothing to play for) to beat Dallas on the road. Oops. I was truly surprised that Baltimore could not beat Houston, and I'm pleasantly surprised at how well Houston has played this year to stay in the playoff race. Other losses included St. Louis at home against the New York Giants, Buffalo at Oakland, and Denver at Cincinnati. On to Week 17!

2014 NFL Picks Week 16

I certainly made things much easier on myself to reach my goal of 70% on the season after last week, as I only lost 2 games to go 14-2. It raised my overall percentage back to 68%, and gives me a chance to get 26 more correct picks over the last 2 weeks. I was correct in picking my only upset pick of the week (Arizona over St. Louis) and also my Pick of the Week (Baltimore over Jacksonville). I gave myself a cushion for upset picks (17-15 on the season) and improved to 13-2 for PotW.

I only lost 2 matchups this week, and 1 was certainly not picked by many. Green Bay lost in an upset to Buffalo, and unfortunately Dallas beat Philadelphia on the road. On to Week 16:

2014 NFL Picks Week 15

Pretty terrible week last week, finishing 9-7. My overall percentage dropped a point to 67%. I will now need 40 wins over the next 3 weeks to reach my goal of 70% correct for the season. I did manage to correctly pick my Pick of the Week (Green Bay) and was right in my only upset pick (Seattle). Records on those picks are 12-2 and 16-15 respectively, as I am finally above .500 for the season again for upset picks.

I had some bad luck last week, but also some terrible picks. I dropped the first of 2 games with no favorite, as I incorrectly picked Tennessee to win at home over the New York Giants. Once again I cannot predict how Pittsburgh will play with any accuracy, as they easily beat Cincinnati on the road after I thought they'd lose. Another team impossible to predict is New Orleans, who apparently forgot they had a game to play against Carolina. I had contemplated switching my pick in the Baltimore-Miami game to the Ravens, but didn't get to a computer before kickoff. I lost the other game with no favorite, with Arizona finding a way to beat Kansas City. San Francisco somehow lost to Oakland in a game that nobody saw coming. And lastly, I really don't know why I picked San Diego over New England, but I got that game wrong too. On to Week 16, which can't be any worse. Right?

Thanks for all the good times J-Roll

Longtime Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers today. While his skills have certainly diminished over the last few seasons, there's no denying that J-Roll was a Philadelphia favorite and an excellent player through his tenure as a Phillie. I wish him all the best in LA, but this is my favorite memory from him:

2014 NFL Picks Week 14

I maintained the status quo last week, going 11-5 and keeping my overall percentage at 68%. I barely won my Pick of the Week (Miami), but improved to 11-2 on the year. I managed to win my only upset pick (Philadelphia wasn't favored for some reason) and am back to .500 on the year at 15-15. Keep in mind I finished last year at 22.5% picking upsets, so I'm faring far better this year. Lastly, I misspoke last week when I said I needed 50 correct picks from the remaining 64 games to reach 70% on the year; turns out I was a week off! NOW there are 64 games left in the regular season, and I will need 49 wins to reach that goal.

I ended up picking 2 of 3 Thanksgiving games correctly, as San Francisco failed to show up at home against Seattle. Baltimore also lost at home, but San Diego needed a last minute come back to win. The New York Giants gave Jacksonville their 2nd win of the year, after blowing a 21-0 lead. Pittsburgh only lost by 3 at home to New Orleans, but the game was never that close. Side note: can I just not pick those teams anymore? They're next to impossible to predict! Lastly, Arizona was unable to beat Atlanta on the road but still maintain the #1 seed.

2014 NFL Picks Week 13

Last week did not start off well for me, as I lost the Thursday night game (as I'm sure everyone else did too). However, I recovered and finished 12-3 for the week with my second best record so far. The 12 correct picks included my Pick of the Week (Indianapolis) and my lone upset pick (Cleveland), and I am 10-2 and 14-15 on the season, respectively. My overall percentage increased a bit to 68%, and I will need to win about 50 of the remaining 64 games to reach my goal of 70% for the season. The bye weeks are no more, so bring on the football!

As I mentioned above, I incorrectly picked Kansas City to beat winless (at the time) Oakland. Can't blame me for that one. I picked Houston at home over Cincinnati in a toss up, so not upset about that one. And I really have to stop picking New Orleans (or anyone from the NFC South) as they were unable to beat Baltimore at home. On to this week's picks, including 3 Thanksgiving Day games!

2014 NFL Picks Week 12

By the time last Thursday's game was over, I reached 100 wins for the season! However, the rest of the games didn't go quite so well as I finished 8-6 for the week. It dropped my overall mark by a few tenths, but nothing significant. Rounding up a little, I'm still at 67%. I was only 1 of 3 for upsets, which brings that overall tally to 13-15. My Pick of the Week was barely successful, but raised my  record to 9-2.

So let's get this out of the way: Nobody was picking St. Louis over Denver. Don't even try to tell me you did! Washington proved they can't win with any QB, as Tampa Bay beat them for only their 2nd win all year. I picked home underdog Carolina to win, but Atlanta decided to spoil that party late in the game. Houston ended up beating Cleveland, once again proving that Cleveland is impossible to predict. My 5th and final loss from the 1pm games came when New Orleans failed to score more than Cincinnati; 2 more teams I can't figure out. And finally, in my "what was I thinking?!?" upset pick, Arizona beat Detroit at home. And so we come to Week 12, where we will see the last of the by weeks:

Thursday, 8:30pm
Kansas City Chiefs at Oakland Raiders
Sunday, 1pm
Detroit Lions at New England Patriots
Cleveland Browns at Atlanta Falcons

2014 NFL Picks Week 11

I managed to fare slightly worse than last week, but still increased by overall mark slightly with a 9-4 record for Week 10. It wasn't enough to raise it above 67% overall, but still an improvement. I correctly chose my Pick of the Week (Denver over Oakland) and improved to 8-2 overall. I was 0-1 in my only upset pick of the week, dropping that record below .500 again to 12-13.

I'd have to look back, but this may have been my first Thursday Night Football loss. Shame on me for picking anemic Cincinnati over "are they good?" Cleveland. Again, I lost 2 very close games late, as San Francisco beat New Orleans and Kansas City defeated Buffalo, both on the road. Finally, in a game I'm sure nobody picked correctly, the New York Jets took care of the Pittsburgh Steelers. On to Week 11:

Thursday, 8:30pm
Buffalo Bills at Miami Dolphins
Sunday, 1pm
Minnesota Vikings at Chicago Bears
Seattle Seahawks at Kansas City Chiefs
San Francisco 49ers at New York Giants

2014 NFL Picks Week 10

I saw a definite improvement during Week 9, as I finished at 10-3 (2nd lowest loss total of the year). It raised my overall percentage a tad to 67%+. After losing last week, I correctly chose my Pick of the Week to improve to 7-2. I only picked 2 upset picks, but was successful in both to bring me back to .500 on the season at 12-12.

While others may had picked Miami over San Diego, nobody would have picked a 37-0 blowout. Oops. I also doubt that anybody picked St. Louis to beat San Francisco, but that's what happened. Finally, I regret not picking New England at home against Denver in a toss-up. On to Week 10:

Thursday, 8:30pm
Cleveland Browns at Cincinnati Bengals
Sunday, 1pm
Atlanta Falcons at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Dallas Cowboys at Jacksonville Jaguars (London)

2014 NFL Picks Week 9

So-so picking during Week 9, as I finished at 9-6. A lot of games came down to the wire, as you'll see below. My overall percent dropped every so slightly to 66.7% (down from 67%). I had 4 upset picks last week, and was successful on only 1, bringing my season total to 10-12. As an Eagles fan I was happy to see my Pick of the Week, Dallas, lose to Washington. I knew I should have stayed away from a division game, but alas I am 6-2 overall for POTW.

Like I said, I incorrectly picked several games that were decided in the last minutes or even seconds of the game. This included Baltimore losing to Cincinnati by 3, Tampa Bay losing by 6 to Minnesota in OT, Seattle beating Carolina by 4, Philadelphia (unfortunately) falling to Arizona by 4, and finally Washington upsetting Dallas by a field goal in OT. The only other loss for me was the Green Bay/New Orleans game, which kept the Saints in the division race. Let's see if Week 9 has any easier games to pick:

Thursday, 8:30pm
New Orleans Saints at Carolina Panthers
Sunday, 1pm
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Cleveland Browns

2014 NFL Picks Week 8

Compared to last week, this week was a let down at 11-4. Realistically I'm not going to go 13-1-1 every week, so 11-4 is pretty good if you ask me. After finishing 5-8 week 4, I have at least 11 correct picks in each of the last 3 weeks with a 35-9-1 record. That's good for 78%, and has helped in raising my overall percentage to 67%. I had no upset picks last week, but did correctly choose the winner (barely) for my pick of the week. I remain at an even 9-9 in upset picks and improve to 6-1 for picks of the week. Let's look at where I went wrong before picking Week 8's games.

I can't figure Cleveland out this year, as they look good at times but then lose to (previously) winless Jacksonville. Even if I had picked upsets I would not have picked Jacksonville, nor would I have picked St. Louis to beat Seattle. I highly doubt anybody had that game correctly picked. Chicago can't seem to win at home, and fell flat against Miami. Finally, Kansas City upset San Diego on the road, but that wasn't a huge surprise in my opinion.

Can people settle down about the Cowboys?

They have yet to beat a team with a current winning record. The combined winning % of their opponents is 39% (15-23). For reference, the Eagles opponents' is 38% (13-21), and they have beaten a current winning team (Colts). Also, both teams lost against the 49ers (4-3).

Let's wait until Thanksgiving, yeah?

2014 NFL Picks Week 7

Holy shit, what a week of picks for me! I finished Week 6 at an impressive 13-1-1, easily my best mark since I've started picking every week. I was 1-0 for upset picks (Chicago over Atlanta) and San Diego won (barely) over Oakland as my pick of the week. I am now 9-9 in upset picks (50%) on the season, and 5-1 (83%) in picks of the week. My overall % increased by over 4% to 66%, which is probably my best mark at this point in the season. My only loss was picking Seattle over Dallas, and there was a tie in the Cincinnati/Carolina game (though I did have Cincinnati winning).

Eagles vs Giants: Behind the Numbers 2014

I won't lie, I was a bit nervous heading in the Sunday night game last week. The New York Giants had been playing pretty well, winning 3 straight along the way. While the Philadelphia Eagles came into the match-up at 4-1, they had yet to really impress a majority of fans. My, how one game can change all of that! The Eagles dominated the Giants, winning 27-0 in impressive fashion. They will head into the bye week at 5-1, tied with the Dallas Cowboys (surprisingly). Let's look back at the Eagle's first shut out since before Andy Reid was coach:

There's going to be a 'Joe Dirt' 2

From CinemaBlend:
Like a lot of comedies, Joe Dirt didn’t exactly make a fortune when it first hit the box office. In fact, the results were mediocre at best, but thanks to continued airings on cable and the weird rewatchability of the project, it has slowly turned into a cult classic over the years. Today, we got the best evidence of that yet when a sequel was officially announced for the first time.

According to Deadline, Joe Dirt 2 will begin production in November in Louisiana with an eye toward officially releasing on Crackle in 2015. That’s right. Joe Dirt 2 will be released on Crackle, which seems utterly bizarre until you think about it for a few minutes.

The move comes just a few weeks after longtime David Spade buddy Adam Sandler announced he would be releasing four upcoming movies exclusively on Netflix. That’s obviously a little more high profile than Crackle, but the deal likely got the ball rolling in the former SNL star’s mind, especially since Happy Madison will produce Joe Dirt 2. The project has been in-development for years, but as we know, that means nothing until the money is on the table. So, in the end, money from Crackle is better than no money at all.

Crackle is basically a television network on the Internet. The content is completely free, but it is interspersed with commercials in order to generate revenue. As far as we know, that means Joe Dirt 2 will simply get placed on the website whenever it’s finished and consumers will be free to watch it whenever they have time, provided they’re willing to sit through advertisements. It’s obviously not a perfect way to watch movies, but it’s better than a lot of alternatives.

2014 NFL Picks Week 6

Last week turned out pretty well for me, as I had my best week of 2014 so far. I finished 11-4, good for nearly a 3% increase overall (59% to almost 62%). I was only 1 of 3 for upset picks, which brings that season total to 8-9. I correctly chose Seattle as my pick of the week, and am now 4-1 in that category.

Going over the losses, I could have swapped my upset picks to finish a perfect 15-0. Alas, I did not, and finished with 4 losses. Detroit lost at home to Buffalo on a last second field goal. Chicago seems unpredictable this year, as they lost on the road to Carolina. The New York Giants were able to hold Atlanta to 20 points, and won at home. Finally, New England (a home underdog) and Cincinnati both looked like the opposite teams they were the past few games, as New England demolished Cincinnati. On to Week 6, hoping to continue the trend:

Indianapolis Colts at Houston Texans

Eagles vs Rams: Behind the Numbers 2014

So the bad news is that the Philadelphia Eagles almost blew a 27 point lead to the St. Louis Rams. The good news is that they hung on to win 34-28. The game was much closer than it needed to be, but the Eagles offense seemed to shut down towards the end of the 3rd quarter. It's as if they said "we have a 27 point lead, that's good enough. Shut 'er down boys!". Instead of scoring again to ice the game, the Eagles let the Rams score 21 straight points and gave them a chance to win at the end. Let's take a look at the numbers behind the game; I'll try to keep it shorter this week:

2014 NFL Picks Week 5

Well, that was a regrettable week of picks! I finished 5-8 for Week 4; there were some close games but also a couple of terrible picks on my part. I was 0 for 3 picking upsets, which now sits at an even 7-7. Overall I am 36-25, dropping 5% to 59% on the season. The silver lining is I correctly picked my Pick of the Week, which I am 3-1 at thus far.

Right off the bat on Thursday I was wrong, as I picked Washington to beat the New York Giants. They had played well against Philadelphia the week prior, but that did not carry over. The other New York team was unable to secure an upset home win against Detroit, as was the case with Chicago losing to Green Bay. I was doing OK during the 1pm games, but then Tampa Bay shocking Pittsburgh ruined that. Honestly, who picked Tampa Bay to win? I can't figure out Atlanta, as they look great one week but awful the next: they lost to Minnesota. Philadelphia was unable to score on offense, and yet still had a chance to win the game versus San Francisco. At least they lost with some dignity, unlike the blowouts of the remaining 2 games. I went back and forth on these games, but eventually incorrectly picked New Orleans over Dallas and New England over Kansas City. Week 5 can't be worse...

Eagles vs 49ers: Behind the Numbers 2014

Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later. Unfortunately it happened sooner as the Philadelphia Eagles lost for the first time this year, falling to the San Francisco 49ers 26-21. Before the game the Eagles were the best second half team, and the 49ers were the worst second half team. So naturally the Eagles went scoreless after halftime, and the 49ers scored 13 points in their come from behind victory. The Eagles defense played fairly well and special teams accounted for all their points. The offense was anemic, as I'm sure the numbers will support:

2014 NFL Picks Week 4

And so begins the bye weeks! There won't be 16 games a week until much later in the season now, so each pick is weighted more from week to week. I fared pretty well last week, finishing at 11-5 and bringing my overall to nearly 65%. I was 2 for 3 in upset picks, bringing my season total to 7 for 11 (about 64%). Statistically I'm picking upsets just as correctly as the rest of my picks, so I can't really get too mad at that. If anything, I should be picking more upsets; but that is the nature of picking NFL games. Correctly picked New England to beat Oakland for my Pick of the Week, though barely. 2-1 in that department. Before my Week 4 picks, let's go over where I went wrong last week.

Houston looked to be doing pretty well so far this season, so I felt a win against the winless NY Giants was inevitable. WRONG. Green Bay looked great last week, and Detroit looked terrible so naturally Detroit shut down Green Bay for the win. I have no idea what is wrong with San Francisco, but they fell apart on the road against Arizona. Miami looked great week 1, but has yet to play anywhere close to that level the last 2 weeks; meanwhile Kansas City looked awful the first 2 weeks but beat Miami with no problem. In pretty much the same fashion, Pittsburgh took care of Carolina convincingly. Onward to Week 4!

Thursday, 8:30pm
New York Giants at Washington Redskins
Sunday, 1pm
Miami Dolphins at Oakland Raiders
Detroit Lions at New York Jets

Jim Carrey to host SNL this season

From Vulture:
We already know that Chris Pratt, Sarah Silverman, and Bill Hader are scheduled to host the first three episodes of SNL this season. Now The Wrap reports that Jim Carrey will also hostSNL this fall. This will make a third turn as host for Carrey, following his 1996 and 2011 appearances. The Wrap doesn't specify a date, but it will be surrounding Dumb and Dumber To's November 14 release, so at minimum, expect one or two sketches where Carrey wears a sweater.

Eagles vs Redskins: Behind the Numbers 2014

Well, looks like the Eagles finally decided to show up for a full game! Unfortunately no one informed the defense, which was essentially non-existent the entire game. The offense picked up the slack though, as the Philadelphia Eagles beat their divisional rivals Washington Redskins in exciting fashion 37-34. 3-0 for the first time since 2004! It was certainly an exciting offensive shootout (I think both teams are still scoring touchdowns), so let's see how the numbers support what we saw:

2014 NFL Picks Week 3

Really wish I changed my "Pick of the Week" for week 2 once the Adrian Peterson news came out, but unfortunately I didn't (it would have been New England). That being said, I still expected New Orleans to defeat Cleveland. There were plenty of other surprises last week though, as I managed to finish at 9-7. Overall I am 20-12 after 2 weeks, good for 62.5% correct. Let's see where I went wrong:

I already mentioned my Pick of the Week, and 4 of my remaining 6 losses were upsets. Those included Buffalo over Miami, San Diego over Seattle (which nobody in their right mind had winning), beat up St. Louis over Tampa Bay, and Chicago coming back to beat San Francisco. I also didn't start the week off great, as I incorrectly picked Pittsburgh to upset Baltimore (though who expected them to play that badly?). My final loss was also an incorrect upset pick, this time being wrong for picking Detroit over Carolina. 2-2 in upset picks (5-3 overall) and 1-1 overall for Picks of the Week. Last week before the byes start, so I'm hoping to get some wins in. There's some damn tough games to pick though:

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Atlanta Falcons
Sunday, 1pm
Minnesota Vikings at New Orleans Saints

Darrell Hammond to become new SNL announcer

From Variety:

The new “voice” of “Saturday Night Live” is going to have a familiar tone
Darrell Hammond, the versatile impressionist who held forth on the program between 1995 and 2009 – the longest tenure of any cast member on the show – will return to the venerable program as its announcer, Hammond and show executive producer Lorne Michaels said in interviews with USA Today and The New York Times. He will replace Don Pardo, the program’s longtime announcer who passed away in August.
Hammond has some familiarity with his new duties. He has at times quietly substituted for Pardo when he had voice problems, according to the reports.
Michaels told USA Today that Hammond would not replicate Pardo’s voice, but would come up with his own take on the role. “”I just knew it wouldn’t be anybody who sounded like Don or replicated him,” Michaels told the media outlet. “It can’t be what it was, but it could sort of be in the same tradition. And it will be nice to have Darrell around. He understands the show and will probably be helpful in ways we haven’t yet figured out.”

Eagles vs Colts: Behind the Numbers 2014

The kick is up and it's GOOOOOOOD! Eagles win 30-27!!!

The kick is up and it's GOOOOOOOD! Eagles win 30-27!!!

See what I did there? I hate icing the kicker; can someone please do a study on how ineffective it is? I had no doubt that Cody Parkey would drill the kick the second time, and he did just that to give the Philadelphia Eagles a dramatic 30-27 comeback win over the Indianapolis Colts as time expired. Once again the Eagles found themselves in a first half hole before storming back in the last 30 minutes. The game was still fairly close throughout with the Colts and Eagles seemingly evenly matched, so let's see if the numbers support that:

2014 NFL Picks Week 2

It wouldn't be the NFL if there weren't plenty of surprises after Week 1. Luckily I was able to correctly predict some of those upsets, finishing 11-5 overall and 3-1 for upset picks. I also was correct with my "Pick of the Week", as Philadelphia was able to take care of Jacksonville after a terrible first half. Of the 5 games I incorrectly picked, I truly wasn't surprised by any of them.

New England losing to Miami was certainly not expected, but Miami always tends to play well against NE it seems. Same situation with Atlanta and New Orleans; division rivals that play tough. If I were to pick one surprising upset, it would be Buffalo over Chicago. Chicago played awful at home. Ditto for Kansas City, losing to Tennessee at home. Lastly, Washington looked pathetic losing to Houston on the road, but I don't think anybody had high hopes for them anyway. On to Week 2:

Pittsburgh Steelers at Baltimore Ravens

Miami Dolphins at Buffalo Bills

Apple unveils iPhone 6

Everything you need to know is here

Personally, I'm glad I just got the iPhone 5s. The current trend of "mini tablets" as phones is just not for me. I need a phone that is going to fit in my pocket for Christ's sake! I have a tablet that I carry around when I need to, and phones, no matter how big, do not have the capabilities of a tablet or computer.

Eagles vs Jaguars: Behind the Numbers 2014

**For those new to BTN, be sure to check out previous installments every week by clicking the tag below each post**

Yesterday marked the opening day of the 2014 NFL season for the Philadelphia Eagles, so today marks the return of Behind the Numbers! The game against the Jaguars was certainly a tale of two halves (how many times have you heard that already?) but in the end the Eagles won in a blowout 34-17. Even though they were down 17-0 at the half, the game never really felt out of reach; what will the numbers say?

2014 NFL Picks Week 1

Football is back, baby! (On my birthday of all days!) And so am I, with my third (second full) season of NFL Picks. I finished the 2012 season with 65% correct and 2013 with a slightly worse 60% correct. Obviously looking to improve on those numbers this year.

Before I get to this year's picks, I'm going to take a quick look back at last year. Though I finished the season at 60%, I was straight up not good in the playoffs. I was 5-6 (45%) overall, including an incorrect Super Bowl pick. I hope nobody took any betting advice from me! I plan to change that this year though.

Almost ready for the picks, but a couple things to go over. I am adding a new feature, which will be my "Pick of the Week". This should help fans in suicide pools, and will be noted by an *asterisk*. Like last year, upset picks will be shown in italics and my winners (picked straight up) will be bolded. Without further ado:
