Goodbye, Andy

Thanks for all the great seasons you gave us. 14 seasons with the Eagles, numerous playoff appearances, and 1 Super Bowl loss. Andy Reid, we loved to hate you, but you were a great coach. We'll miss you big guy.

What's next for Quentin Tarantino?

From ComingSoon:
Speaking to The Root, Tarantino said that "there's something about this that would suggest a trilogy. My original idea for Inglourious Basterds way back when was that this [would be] a huge story that included the [smaller] story that you saw in the film, but also followed a bunch of black troops, and they had been f--ked over by the American military and kind of go apes--t. They basically -- the way Lt. Aldo Raines (Brad Pitt) and the Basterds are having an "Apache resistance" -- [the] black troops go on an Apache warpath and kill a bunch of white soldiers and white officers on a military base and are just making a warpath to Switzerland."
He added: "So that was always going to be part of it. And I was going to do it as a miniseries, and that was going to be one of the big storylines. When I decided to try to turn it into a movie, that was a section I had to take out to help tame my material. I have most of that written. It's ready to go; I just have to write the second half of it.

"That would be the third of the trilogy. It would be [connected to] Inglourious Basterds, too, because Inglourious Basterds are in it, but it is about the soldiers. It would be called Killer Crow or something like that."

NFL Picks for Week 17

Last week of regular season games this week, but I will be picking games for the playoffs as well. Last week I finished 11-5, and finally had what I would call a good week. It had been a while! Surprised at how poorly Houston and Pittsburgh played, and the Dallas/New Orleans game was decided in the 5th quarter. Tampa Bay/St. Louis game was a toss-up, so no surprise there. And I've come to the conclusion that you can't tell which Jets or Chargers team is going to show up each week. Oh well, on to Week 17! With the final game to decide the NFC East, can I finish strong?

Sunday, 1pm
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Atlanta Falcons - 4
Cleveland Browns at Pittsburgh Steelers - 3
Philadelphia Eagles at New York Giants - 1
Carolina Panthers at New Orleans Saints - 2
Houston Texans at Indianapolis Colts - 2

Apparently there was going to be a remake of "Yellow Submarine"?

It's now been scrapped, but Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Back to the Future) was in line to direct a remake of the classic Beatles film Yellow Submarine. I have no doubt that Zemeckis would have done a good job, but I do question whether the film needed to be remade in the first place. Basically, I'm ok with finding out this isn't happening. Even Zemeckis himself said
"...it’s probably better not to be remade — you’re always behind the eight-ball when do you a remake."

Eagles vs. Redskins II: Behind the Numbers

When you have 4 wins and 11 losses on the season, chances are you probably won't have a good division record. So far the Eagles are 1-4 in the division, with 2 losses against the Cowboys and after last week, 2 losses against the Redskins. The game managed to be fairly entertaining, and came down to the final anticlimactic play. How close was the 27-20 score? Let's find out:

Yet another game in which the Eagles offense outgained the opposition, but yet another loss. Turnovers were AGAIN an issue, and the Birds third down conversion rate was again sub par. By comparison, the Redskins didn't have as many first downs, but were able to convert half of their third downs and thus sustained drives. Both teams were good with penalites and similar in the rushing attack. The Eagles pass game demolished the Redskins, but in the end an underthrown ball cost the Eagles a chance at OT.

Flash Gordon

May very well be the worst movie ever made. My brothers decided to watch it tonight (after watching Ted of course) and I hate them for it. Do NOT watch Flash Gordon. Please, save yourself!

1,000th Post Extravaganza!

I can't believe I made it to 1,000 posts! On second thought, I'm not too surprised at the number, but rather how quickly I reached this milestone. I vowed to make at least 1 blog post every day since I started the B Long Blog way back on April 14, 2011; I only recently broke the streak and missed one day (11/11/12). But I have more than made up for it, as I have now posted 1,000 times over the last 623 days. That averages 1.6 posts per day... not too shabby! I'd still like to see that increase to 2 posts per day, but it's not always easy as I do have a life outside of the blog (I know, it's hard to belive). Click the link above for some stats on the timeframe.

For more stats and facts, look no further! I'll have plenty, so let's get started.

As of now, at 9:30pm on December 26, 2012 (Boxing Day!):

An article on Beck's "Song Reader"

I'll just link to the article, but Vulture has a great article about Beck which you can read here. It's fairly insightful to some of his earlier works, and contains some interview bits that help us see inside his crazy head a little bit.  It ends up discussing Beck's latest "album" - Beck Hansen's Song Reader. Read more about that here, from a previous post!

Eagles vs. Bengals: Behind the Numbers

Mad mad mad late on this one, but you know the drill by now. Added an additional stat that I felt really was the story of the game: Points Off Turnovers. What a discrepancy! I won't bother you with commentary on this one, as it speaks for itself. Another game, another loss.

Yeah, the score was lopsided. But that was due to the added stat of "points off turnovers" where the Bengals scored a ridiculous 27 points off of the Eagles 5 turnovers. 3 touchdowns, 2 interceptions. On the flip side, the Eagles only scored 6 field goals off 2 takeaways.  This was a close game for a while, but the ultimately turnovers were the story once again for this Eagles team.

There's just something about grown ass adults acting like little kids that just cracks me up everytime. This installment of "Kid Snippets" comes just in time for the holidays, in which the adults act out a scene where Santa is caught putting presents under the tree. NFL Picks for Week 16

Only 2 weeks left in the regular season! Still plenty of playoff spots to be decided though. I went 10-6 again last week; I seem to be just a few toss-up games away from a having a great week. Not too surprised that Baltimore lost to Denver, but was shocked at how lopsided it was. I picked San Diego after they had an impressive win last week, but that was a fluke. And where did Arizona come from? Did NOT expect that. Also quite surprised that New England lost to San Fran. Let's see what Week 16 has in store:

Saturday, 8:30pm
Atlanta Falcons at Detroit Lions - 5
Sunday, 1pm
Minnesota Vikings at Houston Texans - 4
New England Patriots at Jacksonville Jaguars - 5
Oakland Raiders at  Carolina Panthers - 3
St. Louis Rams at Tampa Bay Buccaneers - 2
Cincinnati Bengals at Pittsburgh Steelers - 2
Washington Redskins at Philadelphia Eagles - 2
New Orleans Saints at Dallas Cowboys - 3
Tennessee Titans at Green Bay Packers - 4
Indianapolis Colts at Kansas City Chiefs - 4
Buffalo Bills at Miami Dolphins - 1
San Diego Chargers at New York Jets - 1
Sunday, 4pm
Cleveland Browns at Denver Broncos - 5
New York Giants at Baltimore Ravens - 1

Eagles vs. Buccaneers: Behind the Numbers

Woah, was that a win last week by the Eagles? I had forgotten what that felt like! A beautiful final drive led by Nick Foles allowed the Eagles to come out on top on the last play of the game. Do the numbers support the final score?

Pretty evenly matched teams here, with the Eagles having a slight edge in final score, plays, total yards, average gain, first downs, and 3rd down %. They also fared much better in the penalty department, committing only 2 penalties for 13 yards; the Buccaneers had 8 for 60 yards. Nick Foles definitely had his best offensive game of the year, and that was reflected in the Birds domination over the Bucs in the passing department. On the flip side, the Eagles run game was abysmal against the top ranked rushing defense of the Buccaneers, and I'm sure Bryce Brown had a wake up call. Oh, and of course the Eagles lost the turnover battle!

Now that's some holiday spirit!

What "Bah Humbug" sign wouldn't be complete without skulls?

Invisibility Cloak?

From UPROXX:
"Canadian company Hyperstealth Biotechnology Corp. (I’m sending them my resume now) has created a material that hides whatever’s behind it by bending light waves. The company is funded by the American and Canadian military, so their research is as secret as Severus Snape’s true loyalties. Oh yeah, that’s right, I know my Harry Potter characters. Ron, Hermione, uh, blonde douchebag guy, Helena Bonham Carter — I could go on."

The pictures you see are apparently not actual photos of the invisibility cloak, but the company says their product works that well. I'd love to give them the benefit of the doubt, but why not post actual photos of the cloak?

NFL may expand playoffs up to 16 teams

From USAToday:
Commissioner Roger Goodell revealed Wednesday that the league's competition committee will explore expanding the postseason field, and that could mean a heaping helping of mediocrity on wild-card weekend. "We'll look at probably 14 or 16 teams," he said.

Interesting. I have no idea how they'd make a 14 team playoff field work, so if any expansion were to occur it would most likely be 16 teams. 16 playoff teams means half of the NFL's 32 teams would make the playoffs; we'd surely see a lot more 9-7 and 8-8 teams. Allowing some non-deserving teams in is a concern, but it will make the path to the Super Bowl more interesting and entertaining. And of course, I'm all for it if the Eagles make one of the final spots!

Rush, Public Enemy, Heart, and more inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

As I mentioned earlier in the year, Rush finally had a good chance of being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. To follow up, they finally did; along with Public Enemy, Heart, Randy Newman, Donna Summer, and Albert King. Congrats to all the bands/artists, especially Rush who have been deserving perhaps more than anyone else over the years.

Good news: More Arrested Development!

Apparently Mitch Hurwitz filmed too much for the upcoming 10 episode run of Arrested Development on Netflix, so that means more episodes! I don't think anybody is complaining, as there will now be 12-15 new episodes of the series. Production is on hold for the time being due to this "complication" but the new episodes are still set to premiere in Spring of 2013. Coincidentally, that is around the time I will be signing up for Netflix.

NFL Picks for Week 15

10-6 overall, but it felt like it was worse than that. That's probably because all 6 of my losses came during the 1 o'clock games, where I went 5-6. I was surprised at the Falcons, Steelers, and Bears losing, and to a lesser extent the Ravens. Dallas/Cincinnati game was a toss-up, and ended up coming down to the final play. Glad I was wrong about the Eagles; they finally won a game! Week 15, here we come!

Eagles vs. Cowboys II: Behind the Numbers

Second game against the Cowboys this year, and second loss by the Eagles. I'm not going to discuss this one seeing as it's a week behind; it gets really old to talk about all these losses! I will say that the game was very evenly matched based on the statistics you see below. However, once again, a turnover by the Eagles led to 7 points by the Cowboys and guess what! The Eagles only lost by 5! There's your difference folks, and the story of the 2012 Philadelphia Eagles in a nutshell. On to the stats:

Apparently the defenses decided to take the game off! Look at the offensive numbers for both teams; ridiculous. A few things of note: only one 5 yard penalty by the Birds, but they also had the only turnover of the game. Bryce Brown, you suck.

Eagles vs. Panthers: Behind the Numbers

Yeah, I'm a week behind, but who cares. I've given up on the season like the rest of you, so there will be very little commentary on this one:

Pretty obvious here discrepancies here, namely offenseive plays, net yards, first downs, third downs, and turnovers. You could throw penalty yards in there (101 is pretty damn high) but it doesn't matter since the Panthers won. The only bright spot for the Eagles was their rushing yards, thanks to Bryce Brown. But he was responsible for 2 of the 3 Philadelphia fumbles, so that's a bit of a moot point too. Oh, but they average more yards per gain!

Parks and Recreation: The Movie?

Alas, this is just a fan-made trailer for a Parks and Recreation "movie" but it is quite well done. Poor Lil' Sebastian!

Also, how did I miss this?

Congrats, Texans!

The Houston Texans, temporarily my favorite team since the Eagles SUCK, clinched their 2nd consecutive playoff berth today with a 24-10 win over the Tennessee Titans. The win was the team's 11th of the season (11-1) and is already a franchise best mark with 4 games left to play. With a Indianapolis Colts loss or a Houston win next week, the Texans will clinch the AFC South for the 2nd consecutive year; they also have a great chance for a first round bye and the #1 seed throughout the playoffs.

Let's go Texans!

The Periodic Calendar

I can't tell if this is cool or overly complicated, so let me just say it's "neatly confusing." I'll let the guy who made it, Joey Sellers, try to explain it in a video below. As for trying to understand it for yourself, there's a huge version to look at available here. Basically, it's a wall calendar with EVERY possible year on it, due to what day each year starts on. The History of The Beatles in 5 Seconds

It's from an ad campaign for a new book called "Life in 5 Seconds" by Gianmarco Milesi and Matteo Civaschi. Check it out below, and see a couple more examples after the jump. They're short, but they really do get the point across. More info at Buzzfeed.

The "best" of Tom Hanks, illustrated

I put "best" in quotes because I can't exactly call Turner and Hooch and The Da Vinci Code some of Tom Hanks best films, even though he himself was great as always. Would have liked to see A League of Their Own represented, at least. From Buzzfeed

All the smudges from Angry Birds

Someone decided to spend way too much time on an art project and record every finger swipe and touch needed to complete all 300 levels of the original Angry Birds. Designer/artist Evan Roth (who I featured a little over a week ago) used ink on tracing paper sheets to avoid ruining an iPhone, so without context these just look like a bunch of smudges. With context they still look like smudges, but it's kinda neat. See some examples below, and after the jump watch a video and check out some more pictures:

NFL Picks for Week 13

So I didn't fare too well in my first full 16 game week. Went 8-8, with a few surprises and a few toss-ups. I was surprised by Miami's win over Seattle, and obviously Cleveland over Pittsburgh (though Charlie Batch sucks, I should have seen that coming). I wasn't surprised that Arizona lost to St. Louis, but I was surprised at the score; same goes for Green Bay losing to the New York Giants. The other 4 games were basically toss-ups, and I really have to stop picking the Eagles. Week 13's picks:

Thursday, 8:20pm
New Orleans Saints at Atlanta Falcons - 2
Sunday, 1pm
Arizona Cardinals at New York Jets - 1
New England Patriots at Miami Dolphins - 5

Wow, when it is an obsession?

I was just updating my DVD collection online (red flag #1) and added my 500th title (red flag #2). Now each individual title of that 500 could be a season of a TV show, a single DVD or Blu-Ray, or a multipack containing more than one movie. I'd say its probably around 750 individual films/TV seasons (red flag #3). Just thought I'd share my "obsession" with everyone else, so you can view it at DVD Aficionado!

Being drunk might actually help you survive an accident

I wish I had a Demetri Martin graph to demonstrate the relationship between BAC and survival, but a study by Lee Friedman shows that the higher the BAC from trauma center patients, the higher the survival rate when compared to sober patients with the same injuries. He analyzed nearly 200,000 cases from various Illinois trauma centers from 1995-2009, with BACs ranging from 0-0.5 %. Aside from burn injuries, Friedman found that all other injuries' mortality rates dropped as intoxication rose; some injuries saw a greater effect than others. There is indeed a correlation present, but is it causation? More here, from Neatorama.

Happy Thanksgiving/National Eat Too Much Day

I don't think that second part is real, but it certainly could be. Hopefully everyone is concerned more about the day with family than they are about Black Friday shopping; apparently it has stretched into Thursday. (Grey Thursday?) Don't overcook that turkey, though. From all of us here at the B Long Blog (me), have a fun, great, and safe Thanksgiving! Enjoy the food, football, and booze!

To make the day more interesting, here's some printable BINGO cards you can play during the events today. View the rest after the jump, from Flavorwire:

Eagles vs. Redskins: Behind the Numbers

Start the season 3-1, then lose 6 games in a row. Now you're at 3-7, with virtually no shot of the playoffs unless you win out and get help. That's the 2012 Philadelphia Eagles, folks! Let's see what the numbers from this loss say:

Unlike last week, not too many positives for the Eagles here. Despite running 20 more offensive plays, they were outscored by 25, outgained by 100+ net yards overall (89 on the ground), and perhaps most alarmingly, the Redskins nearly doubled the Birds in average gain per play. The 'Skins gained an amazing 7.1 yards per play, helped tremendously by 2 TD bombs completed by RG3. Those 2 plays alone counted for 110 yards, and certainly inflated the total. The Eagles once again put up a terrible 37% 3rd down conversion rate, and amassed another 9 penalties for 70 yards. Washington fared even worse in the penalty department with 13 for 80, but none were game changers for the Eagles. And once again, 3 Eagles turnovers led to 10 Washington points; no takeaways yet again. At least first downs were even, right?

I fared quite well last week, going 12-2 overall. Despite several more OT games, all were decided before ending in a tie. Once again I hang my head in shame for picking the Eagles. Maybe I'll learn? My only other loss was the St. Louis vs. NYJ game, which was basically a toss-up but I went with the hotter team. Oops! Now for Week 12, with lots of games due to the end of bye weeks:

Washington Redskins at Dallas Cowboys -2
New England Patriots at New York Jets - 4
Sunday, 1pm
