New Despicable Me 2 Trailer!

(Vulture)

Why the Ghostbusters are Secretly the Bad Guys

Happy Halloween everybody! If you're too old to trick or treat like me, the holiday doesn't mean too much anymore. It's just another excuse to throw a party, and probably the only valid reason to dress up in a costume in public. Anyway, enjoy the night!

Keeping with the Halloween theme, Cracked asks if the Ghostbusters are really the bad guys... take a second to think about it. What do they do with all those ghosts? According to the animated series, they basically banish them all to "Ghost Hell" regardless of degree of haunting. It would be like a mass murderer getting the same punishment as a trespasser! Watch their discussion on the topic below:

Ghostbusters 3 delayed... again

Yep, not much else to say. Ghostbusters 3 will now begin shooting next fall at the earliest, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Hopefully this can give more time to entice Bill Murray? We'll see. (via)

Star Wars Episode 7?

It's coming whether you like it or not! In a VERY surprising move (I had to check multiple sources to confirm, and make sure it wasn't April 1st), George Lucas has sold Lucasfilm to Disney for $4.05 billion dollars. Yes, that's billion with a "B". Here's the real shocker though: Disney already has plans to release Star Wars: Episode VII in 2015, and eventually Episodes VIII and IX. Since George Lucas has retired, it will be interesting to see the direction these new films go in and just how much influence (if any) Lucas has. I can already see Johnny Depp starring. Interesting indeed.

The deal also include the Indiana Jones franchise, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), and LucasArts.

NFL picks for Week 9

Week 8 was pretty weak for me; 6-8 overall. No idea why I picked Washington away at Pittsburgh, but I supposed I had my reasons. Only went with the Eagles because they were home and Andy Reid was a perfect 13-0 after the bye. Oops! Indy and Tennessee was a tossup, and ended up going into OT. Got burned by picking San Diego over the lowly Browns, but who the hell would ever pick the Browns? Thought New Orleans would out gun the Broncos, but Peyton is playing like an MVP again. Now on to this week's picks!

Eagles vs. Falcons: Behind the Numbers

So it's been another week, and another disappointing Eagles loss. That means another disappointing BTN, so I won't take up too much of your time (if you even read it!). Let's get to it, shall we?

Uh yeah, complete domination by the Falcons over the Eagles. The Birds were beat in every facet of the game, unless you think being tied with 6 penalties is OK. The positives? No turnovers! But no take-aways either, so that's a wash. I really don't have much to say about the numbers in this game; they speak for themselves. The only thing surprising about the 30-17 score is that it wasn't worse. The Falcons scored touchdowns on their first 3 possessions, and then added field goals on their next 3 before FINALLY punting for the first time on their 7th possession (with 7:18 left in the 4th quarter, mind you). By contrast, the Eagles scored on only 3 of 8 real possessions. Let's move on, shall we?

A Scause for Applause

NEW YORK, October 29, 2012 - A serious doping scandal shakes everyone's faith on an all-new episode of "South Park" titled "A Scause for Applause" premiering Wednesday, October 31 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT on Comedy Central.

Rocked by the recent news of drug use by a beloved icon, the world is left feeling lost and betrayed. The boys, join with the rest of the nation, and remove their yellow wristbands. Everyone is on board, except for Stan, who just can’t seem to cut off his bracelet.

Carlos Ruiz to remain a Phillie through 2013

The Philadelphia Phillies made their first decision of the offseason thus far, and picked up the $5 million option on Carlos Ruiz's contract for 2013. This was a no-brainer obviously, as Ruiz was putting up career numbers before he was injured this season. Now if they could fill the holes in the outfield and third base, we might have a team to get excited about next year.

So there's a 65% alcohol beer now

It's fittingly called "Armageddon" and seriously is 65% alcohol (130 proof).  To compare, vodka is usually 80 proof, rum around 93, wine about 25, and beer from 7-10 proof on average. It comes in a 330 mL bottle from Scottish brewery Brewmeister and apparently "has a lot of flavour - malty, hoppy, slightly sweet and lots of yeast". I doubt that, as it probably smells like rubbing alcohol with a hint of beer. To achieve the crazy alcohol content and still qualify as "World's Strongest" beer, the brewery actually froze the beer and removed the ice from the top, effectively concentrating the end product.

If you were wondering, drinking one bottle of Armageddon is equivalent to drinking almost 15 beers at 4% alcohol or a 12 pack of 5% beer. Wow.

Steampunk Proton Pack

First off, I have no idea where this recent obsession with "steampunk" came from. I don't mind it, nor do I love it or hate it. I just have no idea why it's so popular. Anyway, forget everything I said because this steampunk proton pack from Ghostbusters is pretty awesome:

The Tom Hanks Matrix

Well it seems like this is Tom Hanks week at the blog, but I'm ok with that. I think I've said before he's the next Bill Murray, and there could probably be a blog devoting to just Hanks. This post is pretty awesome: it's a "matrix" of all of Tom Hank's movie roles. Each spot is determined by whether the character was goofy or serious, and whether the movie was good or bad (as determined by Vulture). Be sure to click to enlarge!

NFL picks for Week 8

So I've been making picks for all the NFL games for a couple of weeks now, but just decided to start posting them. Good news for me, since I was 12-1 in predicting Week 7 (damn you Tennessee!). Of course, that's following an abysmal Week 6 where I finished 5-9; overall this season I'm 39-17, good for 70% correct. I'll be picking the games straight up (no spread) and I'll probably post them every Tuesday after the Monday Night Football game wraps up. Without further ado, here's the picks for Week 8*; number next to games is my "confidence" from 1-5:

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Minnesota Vikings - 4
Washington Redskins at Pittsburgh Steelers - 2
Atlanta Falcons at Philadelphia Eagles - 2
Miami Dolphins at New York Jets - 3
New England Patriots at St. Louis Rams - 5
Indianapolis Colts at Tennessee Titans - 1
Jacksonville Jaguars at Green Bay Packers - 5
Seattle Seahawks at Detroit Lions - 3
San Diego Chargers at Cleveland Brown - 5

Louis C.K. to host SNL November 3rd

Nothing against Bruno Mars, but he isn't exactly a comedian. Musically he was great on this week's SNL, but the sketches were lacking (aside from the one where he got to sing, go figure). To me, it's fine; the show isn't going to be perfect every week and variety keeps it fresh. However, it's always a plus when a solid comedian is slated to host, so I'll be looking forward to when Louis C.K. hosts SNL in 2 weeks on November 3rd!

AMC back on DISH

Now I can finally stop hearing those annoying commercials telling us to call some number to complain about DISH Network dropping AMC months ago. They weren't only annoying; they were pointless. They aired the commercials on AMC, which means anyone watching them wasn't a subscriber to DISH anyway... were we supposed to put up posters and tell everyone on DISH that they should call this number to get it back? Wouldn't they already know that their cable provider had dropped AMC by the lack of AMC on their TV? I must be missing something, but I don't care anymore since I won't have to hear another one of those god damn commercials again.

LEGO movie release date pushed up... In other news, there's going to be a LEGO movie?

Pretty sure that's the longest title for a post on my blog...

Anyway, yes, there's going to be a full length Lego movie called LEGO; unfortunately it will be 3D CGI instead of stop-motion. But it has Morgan Freeman voicing a character, and apparently Will Arnett as Batman? I don't know, sounds crazy. It'll be out February 7th, 2014.

Iron Man 3 Trailer Teaser

Not to be confused with a teaser trailer... this is actually a teaser to the trailer that will be released this Tuesday. Apparently that's a thing now. Enjoy?

Surprise NFL stat of the season so far

Just found out, thanks to the info button from Comcast, that the Texans and Ravens are the ONLY two teams with winning records in the AFC; the NFC has 7. Both at 5-1, the teams are playing each other right now, with Houston easily handling Baltimore.

And I don't think I've said it publicly, but let me go on record and say that the Houston Texans are my second favorite team, aside from the Eagles of course.

Just to remind everyone...

...there is a Weezer song with the word "gosling" in it. Yep. Thanks Rivers!

Arrested Development Documentary Trailer

Apparently this is taking just as long to come out as the actual show did to return! Seems interesting though, hopefully the self-funded project will be available soon.

Ghostbusters 3 to film next year

My take on what the poster should be!
Still Murray-less unfortunately, but Ghostbusters 3 will begin filming next summer according to director Ivan Reitman. It's getting closer and closer to actually happening, but it still doesn't feel real yet.

Eagles vs. Lions: Behind the Numbers

Another week of BtN, another Eagles loss. Sorry this is so late in the week, but watching these games are frustrating and doesn't exactly make me happy to write about the team.  I'm not gonna bother writing much about this one for now, maybe I'll add more later. Let's look behind the numbers of another loss by a field goal at the last second:

At first glance, there isn't too much dominating for either team. Close score, about the same number of plays, identical passing yards, nearly the same number of first downs. Lions fared better on the ground and in overall yardage, but it took them until 10:21 remaining in regulation to get their first 3rd down conversion. Their penalty yards were through the roof, but they only had 1 turnover to the Eagles 3. Both teams clearly had their pros and cons, but let's get to where the stats are REALLY telling: the 4th quarter and overtime.

What's next for Jim Carrey?

From ComingSoon:
Jim Carrey is said to be eyeing a leading role in Loomis Fargo, Variety reports. The film, based on the true story of one of the largest bank heists in history, will be directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre).

In 1997 David Scott Ghannt, the driver of a Loomis Fargo & Company armored car, formed a criminal team in Charlotte, North Carolina to steal $17.3 million. Although the robbery was initially successful, Ghannt and his co-conspirators were later tracked down and arrested.

The script, originally by Emily Spivey, has since been rewritten by Jody Hill and Danny McBride and, most recently, by Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer.

Carrey's next project is The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, which he is starring in with Steve Carell.

Beatles, or The Beatles?

Which is correct? I've kind of always wondered about this actually, as with almost any band you'll certainly see "the" in front of the group name. Examples are everywhere including The Strokes, The Hives, The Shins, The Black Keys, and The Jimi Hendrix Experience, among others. So should "The Beatles" be added to this list? Or should they join the likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Talking Heads, Stone Temple Pilots, and Jackson 5? Personally, I refer to them mostly as The Beatles, though you'll probably see me refer to them as the Beatles too.

Neatorama details the intense debate going on at Wikipedia.  Kinda ridiculous, but interesting.

Some new info about It's Always Sunny

Read the full article (it's not that long!) at Philly.com, but I'll highlight some key points:

Glenn Howerton (left), Rob McElhenney (center) and Charlie Day dump trash in an upcoming episode of the show.
  • Mac and Dee's (Rob McElhenney and Kaitlyn Olson's) son Axel loves trash trucks, which lead to an episode idea.
  • Said episode is called "The Gang Recylces Their Trash" and it will be out later this season.
  • The episode deals with a trash strike in Philly, and the gang ends up repeating a sceme similar to the one in "The Gang Solves the Gas Crisis, though they are self-aware of this.
  • If you didn't already know, Fat Mac is no more.
  • The show will run at least through 2013, and the cast is in talks for a 10th season.
  • Only 10 new episodes for the new season.
  • This Thursday's premiere is called "Pop-Pop: The Final Solution" in which Dennis and Dee deal with their dying Nazi grandfather.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia returns for season 8 this Thursday at 10pm on FX, followed by the season 4 premiere of The League, which you should also watch if you haven't already.

No new Louie until 2014

Sad face. Much like Larry David did with the similar Curb Your Enthusiasm, Louis CK is taking a year off from Louie:
"I don't want to be making the doughnuts," C.K. said on a conference call. "I want it to be something that comes from somewhere important and stays funny."

The show will return in 2014, and I respect his decision to take some time off to make the show the best he can. Too many (most) shows these days churn out episode after episode with no creativity or heart.

Eagles vs. Steelers: Behind the Numbers

We're now in week 5 of "BTN" and the stats are perhaps the most telling they've been all season. No surprises really, but we'll take a look:

Like I said, based strictly on the stats, this game turned out exactly how'd you expect for the Eagles. The Steelers beat the Eagles in every stat (including penalties) except turnovers. Surprise!  Michael Vick fumbled 3 times and lost 2 of those, while the Steelers did not turn the ball over. Guess who won? However despite being out-gained by about 100 net yards (and 50+ rush yards) this game came down to a last second field goal just like last week's game against the Giants. This time though, the Birds weren't so lucky and lost by 2 in the final seconds. In the end, the Eagles offense and defense failed to make a big play.

While the 2 fumbles by Vick didn't lead to any Pittsburgh points, it still cost the team. One of the fumbles was lost on the goal line, which easily would have been at least 3 points; even this would have forced Pittsburgh to go for a touchdown as time expired, and who knows how that would have turned out. It also stalled a Philadelphia offense that looked pretty good on their first 2 drives. The next possession resulted in another fumble, but the defense came up big on a 4th down play. The next 2 drives lasted barely over 2 minutes, and resulted in punts. Sure would have been nice to have some points on the board early instead of waiting until the second half, no?

The Eagles fared much better in the second half (thanks to some penalties from Pittsburgh), scoring on 2 of their 3 drives. If 3 drives seems like a small amount for an entire half, just take a look at the time of possession chart above. The Steelers clearly controlled the ball better, taking up the last 6:33 of the game before they kicked a field goal. How is that possible? Easy! You challenge a play you shouldn't challenge and call a BS timeout shortly after, leaving you with only 1 timeout left with 10:35 left in the 4th quarter. Yes, I'm talking about time management from Andy Reid, shocking I know.

Speaking of something actually shocking, can we talk about how the Eagles haven't had a sack in over 2 whole games? That's right, no sacks for the second straight week. Did they replace Jason Babin and Trent Cole with high school players? They're getting pressure, but it's not enough. Ben Roethlisberger snaked in and out of tackles when he had to, but looked waaaaaaaay too comfortable on most drives, especially the last couple. Kudos to the Eagles defense for only allowing 16 points (1 touchdown and 3 field goals) but like I mentioned above, they were unable to force a turnover or get a stop late in the game. I'm not going to pin this on the defense though, as the offense needs to score more often. 14 points does not win a lot of games, and neither does gaining less than 200 yards passing and less than 100 rushing. This offense is capable of doubling both those figures, which they have already done.  This team is becoming frustrating to watch. Next week better be a blowout against the Lions so I can shut up.

Miscellaneous
-Timeout use was awful in the second half of a close game, and the challenge was awful considering they went for it on 4th down anyway.
-Speaking of that 4th down call: gutsy, but proved to be necessary.
-The defense is playing well still, and has kept the Eagles in every game thus far. I think it's safe to say we can pin the 2 losses on turnovers and lack of scoring.
-Run defense looked suspect yesterday, but I'm gonna assume it was a fluke.
-I'm not going to say to get rid of Vick, because I don't think it's time for that yet. However, he needs to take a class on securing the ball.
-Minus the fumbles, Vick played an excellent game as QB, with a rating in the 100s. He wasn't able to produce a deep pass play like we've grown accustomed to. Credit the Steelers defense for that.
-Like I bolded above, frustration is the main emotion when watching this team.

Eagles vs. Giants: Behind the Numbers

Welcome to another installment of Behind the Numbers, the new series I put a lot of work into but nobody reads! Regardless, I enjoy analyzing the stats and writing about the games each week, so deal with it. Before I begin, I gotta throw a shout out to Brian Dawkins, whose #20 was officially retired last night.

Right off the bat I have to mention the most alarming stat of the game. NO EAGLES TURNOVERS!!! After racking up 12 through the first 3 weeks, the Eagles managed to protect the ball for all 4 quarters against the Giants.  This proved to be key, as nobody scored until after the 2 minute warning in the first half. The game ended with a low score, so any Eagles turnovers would have been amplified. The lone turnover of the game -another red zone interception by Eli Manning- resulted in an Eagles field goal. Winning the game by only 2 points, this proved to be the difference. Winning 19-17, the Birds are in sole possession of first place in the NFC East, at 3-1. Let's take a look at the stats:
