Cool credit card art

Cain Motter is an artist from L.A. His medium? Credit cards. That's right, credit cards. Cain melts and shapes them into works of art. Ironically, he's using these credit card sculptures to pay off his credit card debt obtained earlier in his life. Here's a few examples:

South Park documentary to air October 2nd

That's right, it's been over a decade since the last new documentary on South Park, but there will be one airing on Comedy Central this October 2nd at 10pm.  Camera crews were in South Park Studios filming during Season 15A this past year.  Should be interesting to see how the South Park guys operate after all these years, and how it compares to the previous documentary.

Unbelievably thin "house"

This is absolutely unreal.  See if you can find what's unusual about this picture:

keret house by jakub szczesny1 Soon To Be The Thinnest Crib In The World? Keret House By Centrala
See that sliver in between those buildings? Yeah, that's a proposed house.

Crazy, right? It's a proposed "house" designed by Jakub SzczÄ™sny of Centrala for Isreali writer Etgar Keret.  It's been dubbed the Keret House  and will be somehow built between 2 existing structures in Wola, Poland.  If this isn't a record for "World's Thinnest House", I don't know what is.  Check out the interior below:

There's plenty of compelling evidence for the "theory" of evolution, but this simple experiment is a visual example of it.  Amazing.

Thoughts on the hurricane

Fuck you Hurricane Irene, if that is your real name. I get home from work at 10:30 and come home to no power. Awesome! Drinking beers until I don't care anymore.

Usain Bolt is Insane/Disqualified *UPDATE*

There's no way the words "coasted" and "10.10 seconds" should be in the same sentence.  But when Usain Bolt jumped out to a 7 meter lead in the World Championship preliminary 100m heats, he coasted to a first place overall 10.10 second finish.  He owns the world record time of 9.58 seconds, which is just absolutely ridiculous.  We'll see if he continues his dominance in the 100m finals.

From USAToday Sports

UPDATE: Turns out Usain Bolt was disqualified in the 100m finals in Korea, due to a false start.  I say they should have let him run anyway, even if his time wouldn't count.  He still has a chance to win gold in the 200m and 4x100m relay finals, however.

Apocalypse?

So apparently the Apocalypse is coming on Sunday? Its a damn hurricane people come on. Do you really need to stock up on 4 cases of water, beef jerkey, and every D battery ever made? Really? Ridiculous.

Edit: In hindsight, I guess it's better to be safe than sorry, but turns out it was largely much ado about nothing.

Jim Carrey is crazy

I have a feeling he'll become the next Bill Murray when he's older... he's well on his way.  Think about it: he is rarely seen in public and it's an event when he is (he recently drew more attention than the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro), he's started acting in indie movies (and more serious roles), and when he pops his head out on video its certifiably Grade-A crazy.  Check out this video for proof.

Dan Aykroyd on Ghostbusters 3

From ComingSoon.net:
"Yes, we will be doing the movie and hopefully with Mr. Murray," he says, "That is our hope. We have an excellent script. What we have to remember is that 'Ghostbusters' is bigger than any one component, although Billy was absolutely the lead and contributive to it in a massive way, as was the director and Harold [Ramis], myself and Sigourney [Weaver]. The concept is much larger than any individual role and the promise of 'Ghostbusters 3' is that we get to hand the equipment and the franchise down to new blood."

The comedian also confirmed reports that the plot will revolve around a new generation of Ghostbusters and hinted at the states of his and Ramis' characters.

"My character, Ray, is now blind in one eye and can't drive the cadillac," he says, "He's got a bad knee and can't carry the packs... Egon is too large to get into the harness. We need young blood and that's the promise. We're gonna hand it to a new generation."

As for who might be cast as the new characters, Aykroyd says that, while no decision has been made, he does have a fondness for one piece of prospective casting.

"I like this guy Matthew Gray Gubler from the 'Criminal Minds' show," he adds, "But there's going to be a casting. We're going to see everyone that wants to do it. We're going to need... three guys and a young woman."

Steve Jobs resigns as CEO of Apple

Did not expect this!  I wonder how this affects the development of the Humancent-iPad...
From Reuters.com:
Silicon Valley legend Steve Jobs on Wednesday resigned as chief executive of Apple Inc in a stunning move at the technology giant he co-founded in a garage.
The 55-year-old Apple co-founder and pancreatic cancer survivor has been on medical leave for an undisclosed condition since January 17.
Apple said Steve Jobs has been elected chairman and Tim Cook has been elected CEO.

11 Eye-Opening Statistics About Strippers

  1. One-in-three strippers really *are* putting themselves through college. It's an old joke that every stripper says she's just doing it to put herself through school. Even the really old one who'd even Gabrielle Carteris would look at and say, "Yeah, no way she's college age."

A study found that 33 percent are, in fact, telling you the truth: It's college by day, stripping by night. (With no time left over to fight crime. 0 percent are confirmed superheroes.)
  2. The most common reason for getting into stripping is... wanting to dance? At least that's what they say. "I just wanted to dance" beat out "I wanted to make more money" or "My job sucked or, uh, didn't exist." I guess there aren't that many jobs for the dance majors of America, but exotic dancing seems like a liiitle bit of a stretch. A dance major getting a job in their field by becoming a stripper is kinda like an Italian major getting a job in their field by working at Olive Garden.

Where Are They Now? The Cast of Clarissa Explains It All

Hopefully the first entry in a series of "Where Are They Now" posts, I decided to start with the Nickelodeon classic Clarissa Explains It All after watching reruns on "90s Are All That" on TeenNick (great idea!) the other night.  I'm focusing on the 5 main characters: Clarissa, Ferguson, Sam, and Mr. and Mrs. Darling. Names link to IMDB pages:

The cast of Clarissa Explains It All

Clarissa Explains It All tv show photo1. Melissa Joan Hart (Clarissa Darling)
Clearly the most famous/successful of anyone on the show, Melissa is now 35 years old and a mother of two.  Her spouse, since 2003, is Mark Wilkerson, frontman of "Course of Nature".

After the successful run of Clarissa, Melissa Joan Hart briefly attended New York University before landing the role of Sabrina Spellman on Sabrina the Teenage Witch (made-for-TV movie and TV series).  Sabrina lasted even longer than Clarissa, running 7 seasons from 1995-2003.  During the show's successful run, Hart had several roles in made-for-TV movies, as well as the Hollywood films Can't Hardly Wait (1998) and Drive Me Crazy (1999).  She also provided voicework for various projects, and guest-starred (as Sabrina Spellman) on several other TV shows (Boy Meets World, Teen Angel, etc.).

Once Sabrina had ended, Hart was unable to keep her streak of successful TV series going.  She still remained busy, however, starring in even more made-for-TV movies on ABC Family and guest-starring on Law and Order: SVU (2007).  She ventured into directing, producing a few short films and directing a music video for her husband's band.  She appeared on Dancing with the Stars in 2009, and in 2010 starred in the film Nine Dead.

Melissa Joan Hart (still looking good!) continues to act and is currently starring in Melissa & Joey on ABC Family. She owns a candy shop called "SweetHarts" and resides with her family in Westport, Connecticut. She maintains her own website as well.

Total IMDB credits: 136

2. Jason Zimbler
(Ferguson W. Darling)

Who can forget that red hair?  And that annoying personality?  If Jason played his cards right, he could have been Michael Cera before Michael Cera was Michael Cera.  But in all honestly, Zimbler is best only known for his role as Ferguson (or Fergwad or Fergeek); it's even his official IMDB picture.

Despite few acting credits, Jason (age 34) is successful in his own right.  He has a Bachelor's degree from Notre Dame University in Business Administration, as well as a graduate degree in Theatre Directing.  While attending NDU, he and a fellow classmate started the "X2 Radio" show.

He has used his education to his advantage, becoming involved in several productions in NYC.  He has been head of Buck's Rock Performing and Creative Arts Camp since 2003.  In 2007, Zimbler, along with Sam Kusnetz, founded "The Re-Theatre Instrument" company in Portland, Oregon.

In perhaps the least surprising revelation considering Ferguson's nerdy characteristics, Zimbler is now a software designer for HBO in NYC, putting his theatre company on hold for the time being.

Total IMDB credits: 5

3. Sean O'Neal (Sam Anders)
Sean, age 35, has done even less than Jason Zimbler post Clarissa.  Besides 2 voices in random TV series (2001 and 2002), he has one lonely appearance in the short The Cost.  He turned down a chance to be the lead in an Orlando based boy-band, right before that craze swept the nation.

He currently dabbles in musical theatre, and is a triple threat (dance, voice, acting) according to his own website.

Total IMDB credits: 6
4. Joe O'Connor (Marshall Darling)
In perhaps the most surprising post Clarissa career, Joe has remained quite active in TV and film.  He has guest starred on numerous television series, with at least one credit in every year from 1996-2011 aside from 2004.  In fact, you've probably seen him without knowing: his credits include Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Friends, The Practice, Melrose Place, Boston Public, The West Wing, ER, Malcolm in the Middle, Cold Case, Reno 911!, Weeds, and a recurring role on Mad Men.

O'Connor has most recently appeared in this year's film The Green Hornet, and the soap opera The Young and the Restless.  He is now married and living in the San Fernando Valley.  I was unable to find much information on Joe (despite him remaining active) but was able to find a fairly recent (and weird)  YouTube interview with him.

Total IMDB credits: 48

Janet(mom) in My Photos by Clarissa explains Clarissa explains5. Elizabeth Hess
(Janet Darling)

Last but not least we come to Elizabeth Hess, who played the at times spacey mother of Clarissa.  She, like Jason and Sam, has posted a modest acting career after Clarissa's run had ended but has remained busy in other ways.

From 1997-2003 she appeared in 3 short films, and also is credited with a guest appearance on Law & Order in 2000.  Most recently (2009) she appeared in the film Handsome Harry and the documentary Heretics, as herself. She focused more on theatre productions, appearing in dozens of plays, both on and off Broadway.

Despite few TV/film acting credits, Elizabeth is currently using her skills (she has a BA from York University and an acting diploma from The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, and attended several other institutions) to teach others at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, Fordham University's Lincoln Center campus, and NTI's O'Neill Center.  She also has dual American/Canadian citizenship.

Right now, Hess (58 years of age) is writing a book called "The Actor's Instrument: The Interplay of Being".  She still acts in theatre, and directs as well.  Tickets can be purchased for Dust to Dust at Elizabeth's website.

New Blade Runner movie in the works

That's right, after 2 decades Ridley Scott is working on a new Blade Runner movie (prequel or sequel).  It's still in the early ages of development, but Scott has signed on as Producer and Director.  If you ask me, I'm glad it's going to be a new movie and not a remake.  The original Blade Runner, based on Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, was excellent and visually stunning, and doesn't warrant a remake to be honest.

5 Sequels Made by People Who Must Not Have Seen the Original

#5 Jaws: The Revenge

Jaws invented the summer blockbuster, is the most famous and profitable movie about people getting eaten ever made -- including Debbie Does Dallas -- and to this day, is the one joy of children made to learn the cello. The sequels were stuck with trying to make "SHARK! AGAIN!" interesting, and plausible.
The conceit of the second film is the same as the first: A giant shark is eating people off of Amity Island, and nobody will believe Sheriff Brody when he says that's what's happening. In the third movie, nobody will believe Chief Brody's son that a shark has broken into Sea World and is eating people, presumably because that could never happen anywhere but inside the mind of a crazy person.

The next to hit 600 homeruns?

When it comes to baseball, there is certainly no lack of statistics.  There's not even a lack of statistics about statistics.  So when Bill James comes up with something he calls the "Career Assesments Formula" it really comes as no surprise.  It predicts career totals for MLB players, and in this case it's homeruns (by age 40).  So who has the best chance to become the next 600 homerun hitter (after Jim Thome accomplished the feat last night)?

Mark Teixeira - 22% chance, 33 HRs needed per year
Prince Fielder - 29% chance, 29 HRs needed per year
Ryan Howard - 33% chance, 36 HRs needed per year
Adam Dunn - 50% chance, 26 HRs needed per year
Albert Pujols - 97 % chance, 18 HRs needed per year

And damn you Adam Dunn for messing up the columns above!

    Arrested Development movie plot revealed?

    From BuzzFeed:

Ron Howard is making a movie about the Bluths using an A-List cast. But Dr. Tobias plays himself because nobody wants to play him in the movie. The Bluths decide to make their own movie in contention with Ron Howard’s.

A movie within a movie? Could be interesting.  Rumor for now, of course, but the official details are also rumored to be coming soon. At least they finally got Michael Cera on board... I have no idea why he was opposed.  Probably some BS about not wanting to play that character again, even though he's played it in every single one of his movies.

    Jim Thome hits #600

In the sixth inning of Minnesota's game against Detroit last night, Jim Thome blasted a 2-run opposite field homerun.  But that was only #599 of the 40 year old's career.  He'd have to wait til his next at-bat in the seventh inning to hit the 600th homerun of his career, becoming the 8th player in MLB history to do so.  He became the second fastest player to accomplish the rare feat, but also the oldest.  Any way you slice it, Thome deserves praise for this milestone.

    Congrats to the former Phillie!!!

The 10 Most Vile Actions of the Paddy's Pub Gang

The Gang on “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” — which returns for its seventh season on September 15 — means to do well. They really do. It’s just that Dennis, Dee, Mac, Charlie, and Frank’s good intentions often clash with the fact that they’re awful, conniving, despicable, racist, and misogynistic people. Their moral decrepitude makes “Sunny” one of the best sitcoms on TV, and its success has paved the way for FX to make other great comedies like “Louie,” “Archer,” and “The League.”

To tide you over until the premiere a month from now, here are the ten most revolting and rotten things the Gang from Philadelphia has done over the show’s first six seasons and 71 episodes, not one of which has anything to do with poor, dead-toothed Maureen Ponderosa.

    10. Human Meat and Teabagging Cricket (“Mac and Dennis: Manhunters”)

Two things in this episode: 1) Because Dee and Charlie, in a rare plot together, keep eating his venison, Frank tells them that they’re actually eating human meat, and although the fake cannibals are disgusted, they don’t care and crave more human flesh. (It’s one of my favorite inter-Gang disgusting moments, because they’re usually destroying other people’s lives, not their own.) 2) After a few beers too many, Mac and Dennis agree that the only game worth hunting is an animal that can fight back. In this case, a human: Rickety Cricket. As if the poor bastard hasn’t gone through enough—Dee said she’d kiss him if he ate a horse turd, she didn’t; he quit being a priest for Dee, only for her to lose interest; the entire Gang got him addicted to crack—he now also watch for Mac and Dennis, who will teabag their prey when they catch him. Why teabagging? “What’s not to like? Cricket with a face full of pubes? Hilarious!”

Continue reading the list at Uproxx

Also, in a related note, my brothers and I are attempting to compile a list of all 71 Sunny episodes in order from best to worst.  Should be done in time for the new season, so stay tuned.

Austin Powers 4 coming a decade later?

That's right, Mike Myers has finally signed on for Austin Powers 4. The last film in the series, Goldmember, came out in 2002.  Does anyone still care?  Time will tell.  It'll certainly rake in more cash than The Love Guru, that's for sure.

    The Office Season 8 Promo

Looks like James Spader is taking over for Steve Carell... we'll see how that goes.

Vick #5 in QB Power Rankings

    1. Aaron Rodgers, Packers: The reigning Super Bowl MVP is coming off one of the most remarkable postseason runs in recent memory. He's handled his business deftly on the field and off -- reference the way Rodgers navigated the local minefield when then-iconic Brett Favre was traded in 2008 -- can make plays with his head, arm and legs and is just 27. If you had to pick one guy to lead your team for the next decade, hard to argue against the man currently wearing the championship belt.

    2. Tom Brady, Patriots: He's coming off his second league MVP campaign in the last four seasons. But he struggled in the playoffs, where he's lost his past three starts after seeming nearly bulletproof early in his career. Rodgers by a hair, as in Brady's now shorter locks.

    3. Drew Brees, Saints: He's passed for 22,918 yards during his tenure in New Orleans, the most prolific five-year stretch in league history. Brees' leadership skills, accuracy and dedication are off the charts. And it takes a special guy to supplant Archie Manning as the most beloved player in franchise history.

    4. Peyton Manning, Colts: Admittedly, ranking the four-time MVP this low doesn't feel right. But he's coming off a season slightly subpar by his ridiculously lofty standards and, more troubling, dealing with a surgically repaired neck at age 35 which throws a dent into what has been his nearly bulletproof persona.

    5. Michael Vick, Eagles: Unlike the QBs listed in front of him (and a couple below him), he doesn't have a ring. What he does have is the scariest skill set of anyone (maybe ever) at the position and, now, the dedication and experience to maximize his gifts.

More RHCP finally coming to Rock Band!

Though not officially confirmed through Harmonix, the method used to uncover these tracks is nearly flawless.  It's been used to "predict" upcoming DLC in the past with a great success rate.  It basically involves guessing a URL on the RockBand.com webpage, since they have a unique page for every song in the game (and apparently upcoming ones).  Anyway, here's the Red Hot Chili Pepper tracks to keep an eye out for:

  • The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie

  • By the Way

  • Californication

  • Look Around

  • Monarchy of Roses

  • Other Side

  • Parallel Universe

  • Scar Tissue

  • Tracks from Fall Out Boy, Incubus, and EMF were also found, but I'm not excited about that.  There were also a motherload of live Pearl Jam tracks found, which adds fuel to the "Rock Band: Pearl Jam" fire.

Sin City 2 could begin shooting this year?

    From ComingSoon.net:

At the San Diego Comic-Con last month, Robert Rodriguez said that Frank Miller has written the script for Sin City: A Dame to Kill For and that "it could shoot as early as later this year."

Talking to We Got This Covered, Rodriguez added that the sequel has financing in place as well:

"Sin City 2 is going good, we're just finishing the script for that, we already got the money. We have everything we need so we can just start shooting as soon as we get the pages."
I, like many other fans of the Sin City series, will believe this when it actually happens.  Can't wait for the film, though, as it should be just as great as the first.

    Heart's All Gone

The next song from Blink 182, "Heart's All Gone", debuted 2 days ago. Personally I like it better than "Up All Night" and the drums by Travis are absolutely sick.  It's less Angels and Airwaves sounding, mainly because it's a fast in your face song with Mark singing instead of Tom. Listen below:

Neighborhoods drops September 27th, 2011.  With such contrast between the two songs released thus far, I cannot wait to see what the finished product sounds like.

Now when the hell is that movie coming out?

    Benches clear during Phillies/Giants game

Leave it to Shane "I need a Lexapro" Victorino to inspire a benches clearing brawl during last night's Phillies/Giants game.  Definitely watch the video here, but it doesn't take a genius to figure out Shane was intentionally thrown at. He hit a homerun earlier in the game, and the Phillies were up by 6 runs at the time.  As a pitcher, you NEVER throw behind a batter unless you're trying to hit him.  That type of errant throw is not accidental by any stretch.

I'm not condoning what Victorino did after the HBP, but he does have the right to be angry and defend his namesake and team.  He went a little over the top as has become expected by Shane, but let's not pretend the Giants were innocent.  Ramon Ramirez was wrong for the intentional HBP, and catcher Eli Whiteside was wrong for trying to tackle Placido Polanco as he was coming over to mediate.  And when I say trying, I mean trying; it was an awful attempt at a tackle.  Polanco was even quoted as saying simply, "He didn't tackle me".

Whiteside, Ramirez, and Victorino were all ejected from the game.  Pablo Sandoval also appeared to have Carlos Ruiz in a choke-hold at one point.  Suspensions have not yet been announced.

Oh, and as for Hunter Pence?  Welcome to Philly.  Tremendous support from the new guy, as he could have easily watched the brawl from afar without getting involved.  Fits right in, for sure.

Breaking Bad's future at AMC in question

When I first read that headline, I had a bad feeling as I thought the show could end before its story is told.  However, Breaking Bad's future isn't in question, just what network it would conclude on.  In summary:

The LAT reported that “tense negotiations” were taking place between AMC and Sony over a fifth season of the drama, which creator Vince Gilligan has said recently is where he would like things to end. Unfortunately for all of them—and for all of us—those talks remain at an impasse, with Sony even reportedly reaching out to other cable networks about taking on Breaking Bad should the deal fall through....  Not only does AMC want to lower overall production costs, it also wants to shorten Breaking Bad’s final season to only six or eight episodes, as opposed to the usual 13.
Of course, as the LAT points out, a new network would probably ask that they drag the show out for more than just one season, which could be its own less-than-ideal compromise. But before we begin prematurely lamenting that, the New York Times now says promisingly that the tone of the talks has improved, that the lowered episode count is “no longer on the table,” and that there was more optimism that a deal would be reached, although that’s still forthcoming.

    Cartoon Color Wheel

As we all know, cartoon characters come in many different colors, even within their respective shows.  Every color in the spectrum is represented, and it's pretty cool to see that visually.  Click here for Slate's "cartoon color wheel".
