The Walking Dead Season 6 Part 1: A Look Back and A Look Ahead

I've been politely asked about a dozen times (you know who you are) to do a post on the latest season of AMC's The Walking Dead. I initially couldn't think of a good idea, but eventually decided to write about the first half of season 6. I've read all the comics to date (they are at issue #151), and I feel that I can apply that knowledge to what may or may not happen in the second half of season 6. Let's start with a look back at the first half:

According to the New York Times, Bryan Cranston will be penning a memoir about his time on Breaking Bad. In his words: "[I'll] tell the stories of my life and reveal the secrets and lies that I lived with for six years shootingBreaking Bad." The book will be published by Simon & Schuster imprint Scribner and released in the fall of next year. Just make sure you inscribe the copy you give to friends and family with: "To my other favorite W.W. It's an honour working with you. Fondly G.B."

"Ron Burgundy" is writing an autobiography

...Random House’s Crown Publishing, [are] releasing an autobiography of Ron Burgundy, entitled, “Let Me Off at the Top! My Classy Life and Other Musings” in time for the release of Anchorman: The Legend Continues. 

Written as a memoir of the mustachioed lothario, Burgundy’s book, hitting shelves on Nov. 19, will cover all aspects of his life, from his childhood and career success to his zest for women and love of his dog Baxter.

Tom Hanks to star in "A Hologram for the King"

Tom Hanks is reuniting with his Cloud Atlas co-director Tom Tykwer for a big screen version of Dave Eggers's National Book Award finalist, A Hologram for the King. Tykwer, who also helmed Run Lola Run and Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, adapted the novel and will direct. The story details "a struggling businessman who, after failing in America, heads to a rising Saudi Arabian city for a last ditch attempt to stave off foreclosure, pay his daughter’s college tuition, and do something memorable," Deadline writes. Yup, Tom Hanks can do his Tom Hanks thing with that. Definitely.

For some reason, they're making a "Go the Fuck to Sleep" movie

Go the Fuck to Sleep is a brilliant picture book for grown-ups. How it'll be transformed into a full-length film isn't entirely clear, but Party Down's Ken Marino and Erica Oyama (a writer on Childrens Hospital and Burning Love; married to Marino) are on the case. We already know Charlize Theron reads the book to her young son, so there's a head start for casting.

If this is indeed true, Samuel L. Jackson absolutely must be involved!

'Clarissa' returns, sort of

It'll be in the form of a new novel, from the original creator of Clarissa Explains It All, Mitchell Kriegman:

"Finally, it's the Clarissa Explains It All book the world has been waiting for. According to EW, Clarissa creator Mitchell Kriegman is writing a where-is-she-now book about Clarissa Darling called Things I Can't Explain, which is tentatively scheduled to come out in 2014.

[The] novel will follow 23-year-old Clarissa as she tries to carve out a career as a journalist and deals with the obstacles toward becoming a real adult: finding and keeping a job in a turbulent economy, the luxury of a first apartment without roommates, figuring out how to deal with parents all over again, and unexpected feelings for a really cute guy who — of course — has an on-and-off again girlfriend.

Will Clerks III be a book?

Please no! From Vulture:

In December, Kevin Smith said his last movie would be Clerks III. This weekend, however, he revealed on "What's Trending" that he's now instead leaning toward writing Clerks III as a book that will be released in installments. According to Smith, this method would allow him to explore the characters much more deeply. And by doing it one chapter at a time, he can incorporate the fan's feedback. Smith understands the criticism that might come from that: “I know people would go, ‘Why would you want to? You’re an artist.'” However, he argued: “Now I’m a new-media artist and the new-media artist involves the audience and that’s something I’ve been doing for nearly 20 years at this point anyway.” From there, he might make a feature or a web series, but the book would be first. Smith acknowledges that this is not a done deal yet and he still needs to talk with his Clerks collaborators about it. If this were one of his movies, this would be a good time for Silent Bob to pipe up and give a long, convincing speech about how it should just be a movie.

Maurice Sendak, dead at 83...

... his hairpiece was 24.  Sorry, had to throw in a BASEketball joke there, it was too good to pass up.  But seriously, Maurice Sendak passed away this morning at the age of 83 due to complications after a recent stroke.  If you don't recognize the name, he's the author of Where the Wild Things Are (and some other children's books apparently).  Ironically, he didn't like children.  Here's a part 1 of a recent interview of Sendak on The Colbert Report:

Watchmen Prequels in the works (UPDATED)

Alan Moore, and plenty of comic book nerdsfans are unhappy about this (though Dave Gibbons has given his blessing). DC Comics will be publishing a 7 part series called Before Watchmen. 
As the title implies, the series will focus on Nite Owl, Rorschach, Dr. Manhattan, Comedian, Ozymandias, Silk Spectre, and the Minutemen in the events before the original Watchmen series.  It will obviously take place in the original "Watchmen" universe, but won't affect the characters in the best selling graphic novel of all time. 
Personally, I think this should be interesting and I'm looking forward to it... we'll be able to see deeper into the "Watchmen" universe and find out more about the characters we love, instead of just watching that movie from a few years ago.  Since the original won't be altered, I don't see what all the fuss is about.  Find out more info from an interview with J. Where's Waldo? to be the next children's book turned movie

Yup, you read that right.  I always thought Hollywood made some interesting choices in their decisions to turn books into films, and Where's Waldo definitely tops that list.  From ComingSoon:

MGM's President of Motion Picture Group Jonathan Glickman today announced that the studio has secured feature film rights to bring Classic Media's "Where's Waldo?" to the big screen in a live-action family adventure.
"We are thrilled to be bringing the search for Waldo to the big screen. Along with our partners at Classic Media, we look forward to making a worldwide adventure that will appeal to 'Where's Waldo?' fans of all ages," Glickman said.

God, No!

Haven't quite finished it yet, but definitely worth a purchase. Penn Jillette writes like he talks; loud, crude, and crazy.
